The Democratic shift

New York Times has a slideshow that shows the remarkable shift throughout most of the US in favor of the Democrats. Not only did Obama easily defend all the Kerry states from 2004, he added nine more states to his tally, with a tenth, Missouri, still to be determined. Moreover, the swing demographics, including moderates and Hispanics, really went Democratic, and the base, including the young and blacks, turned out in very large numbers.

Some places, notably most counties of Arkansas, bucked the trend and ended up more Republican than before. But they have to be attributed to latent racism and Obama's race. And in case of parts of Arizona and Alaska turning more Republican, credit is due simply to John McCain and Sarah Palin hailing from those places.
