The Great Shakeout

Five hours ago, back home in Southern California, there was a major earthquake drill involving millions of people, with public announcements on all TV and radio channels. The scenario involved a hypothetical 7.8 earthquake on the San Andreas Fault, which kills 2,000 and causes $200 billion in property damage.

I hope to never see a horrible earthquake in California during my lifetime, but there is a good chance that I will.

Even though I am 6,000 miles away, in a place that probably qualifies as the most seismologically stable on the Pacific Rim, I'm following the news, and will make sure to stay prepared when I return.
